The rule of thumb is that fixtures should be approximately one-fourth the size of the entry door. If you’re going to use only one fixture beside a door, then the light should be one-third the size of the door. Why this large? Well, outdoor fixtures when viewed from the street will look one-half the size they really are. You also want to have an adequate light throw from the outdoor light to properly illuminate your porch or entryway.
